Allen J. Naftilan, M.D., Ph.D., FACC

Section Chief, Cardiology

Dr. Allen Naftilan received his Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of Chicago and his M.D. from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He completed his internal medicine and cardiology training at the Brigham & Women's Hospital at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. He spent the first eight years of his career at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the University of Michigan and Vanderbilt University overseeing a research lab investigating the biochemistry and molecular biology of hypertension and the renin-angiotensin system. Later, he joined St. Thomas Medical Group in full-time clinical practice where he cofounded the Hypertension Institute with Drs. Mark Houston and Jordan Asher. He also founded the Advanced Heart Failure Clinic at St. Thomas Hospital, where he presently serves as codirector. He joined The Heart Group in 2000 as a partner where he specializes in the treatment of patients with heart failure, complication hypertension and general cardiology. He has written over 50 original papers, review articles and book chapters on hypertension and heart failure and is a frequent speaker on those subjects at both regional and national symposiums.
